I found this article particularly interesting. Most sports teams have video production and graphics teams. But rarely do we think about the team management as an arm of the video department. It’s separated. In the Laker’s case, the daily game footage is edited next to Phil Jackson’s office… it’s team management, not game day entertainment.

Let me put it this way, I’m sure we’ve all been working in after effects and our editor or 3d guy was busy when our boss needed a short edit or 3d intro. It becomes apparent that you’ve got to learn a little bit of some of those other programs. Maybe you’ve even taken a Avid or Cinema 4D crash course online. So, I can understand a scout, looking at the FCP interface and thinking “I can do this”. They may not be the best Editor in the world, but they don’t have to be. It’s just game footage spliced together right? Maybe, but expanding your skill set beyond the obvious program updates and cool new plugin to more substantial skillsets like management, scouting and maybe typography is a great way to be ready for those new hybrid jobs in sports that technology will reveal. Look around, there may be an office in your stadium with a rack of DVR’s, 8 Macbook Pros and you didn’t even know it.

I recently got C4D R11 along with Mograph, Advanced Renderer and NET render. Having never used net renderer before, I have to say its awesome. Although when I start using images in my materials it gets a little complicated. Overall, C4D hasn’t changed to much other than its faster and seems to be more stable. Advanced Renderer however has a revamped GI thats amazing. Looks great, and worth the cheap update.
